It happens often. Someone is upset about some policy or treaty and in a fit of rage, they declare that “this is no different than Nazi Germany.”
It happened at least twice this week. Both time by radical right wing Republicans.
We saw it with Mike Huckabee saying, “It is so naive that [Barack Obama] would trust the Iranians. By doing so, he will take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven.”
Well first of all, no one is trusting the Iranian government. There are ample requirements for inspections in the agreement. And if the Iranians refuse to comply with the inspections, sanctions go quickly back into place. This is not even a “trust but verify” policy that Reagan spoke of. It is a verify because we don’t trust. But it is certainly way out there to claim any comparison to Nazi Germany. And, of course, it is highly offensive on numerous levels.
Just a few days later, Rep. Jodie Laubenberg (R – Texas), talking about Planned Parenthood and the false accusations that they sell fetal tissue, said, “To find out that this culture of death is now leading to the sale – this is no different than what happened in Nazi Germany.”
And again, she is dead wrong. Tissues are NOT being sold. Second, Abortion is legal in the U.S. and around the world. Even if Rep. Laubenberg doesn’t like it. To compare women exercising their reproductive rights and then modern science benefiting from the tissues to help SAVE future lives is not only crazy, it is also deeply offensive.
But then again, the radical right is not a all unfamiliar with being deeply offensive!
